About this position
Doctoral Candidate (PhD) in Community Stability under environmental change at Monash University, School of Biological Sciences, invites applications to join the Community Ecology & Evolution lab led by Dr Giulia Ghedini.
The project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network ReDiLEEP, an international network focused on response diversity research and its applications to ecosystem management, restoration, and biodiversity policy. The successful doctoral candidate will be integrated into this wider network and will have opportunities for international collaborations across Europe and beyond, including connections with researchers in Europe and Japan.
Research focus: the PhD project (DC13) examines the physiological basis and consequences of response diversity in marine phytoplankton communities. The work will investigate how variation and evolution in species physiology propagate through species interactions to stabilise ecological communities under global change. The project combines theory-informed laboratory experiments, physiological assays, and eco-evolutionary approaches to test how differences in species energy use influence persistence, recovery, and community stability.
Funding: the position is subject to securing a scholarship. The lab will support the selected candidate in applying for a Monash University PhD scholarship (domestic or international). The posting notes that Monash scholarships are competitive and generous, typically covering tuition fees, a stipend, and often a relocation allowance.
Eligibility and preferences: applicants must meet Monash PhD scholarship eligibility requirements, including English language criteria.
