About this position

📢 Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioacoustics & Wildlife Ecology at The University of Salford.

This 18-month postdoctoral opportunity is part of the TUNED SESAR JU Project (Toolkit for Noise and Societal Impact Assessment of U-Space-Enabled Drone Operations), a European-funded research project examining how expanding drone operations affect both people and wildlife.

The role is based across the Salford Acoustics Research Centre and the Environmental Research & Innovation Centre (ERIC). The successful candidate will contribute to research on bioacoustics, wildlife ecology, ecological fieldwork, passive acoustic monitoring, bioacoustic classification, and the development of open-source analytical pipelines and metrics for assessing noise exposure risks to avian communities.

Key responsibilities include designing and conducting field experiments on bird responses to noise, collecting and analysing passive acoustic data, applying automated bioacoustic tools, and helping build evidence for environmental sustainability frameworks related to drone noise and biodiversity.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a PhD or near completion in bioacoustics, ecology, zoology, or a related discipline, plus experience in ecological fieldwork, experimental design, acoustic data analysis, annotation/species classification tools, and strong communication and collaboration skills.

Funding and benefits include a competitive salary, excellent pension scheme, 32 days annual leave plus bank holidays and Christmas closure, and training/professional development opportunities. The project is co-funded by the European Union through the SESAR Joint Undertaking.
