About this position
Ghent University, a leading European research institution, invites applications for a doctoral fellowship in the Department of Solid State Sciences, hosted by the Conformal Coating of Nanomaterials (CoCooN) research group. CoCooN is internationally recognized for its expertise in Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and advanced materials characterization, offering an international research environment, strong industrial collaborations, and access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities.
This PhD project centers on atomic layer deposition as a key enabling technology for the semiconductor industry, focusing on area-selective deposition and chemical passivation strategies. As device architectures become increasingly three-dimensional and nanoscale, the need for atomic-scale thickness control and exceptional conformality grows. The research will involve developing passivation strategies for area-selective ALD using gas-phase inhibitor molecules, investigating controlled surface cleaning approaches, and applying in situ spectroscopy to unravel chemical and physical surface processes. The candidate will conduct experimental research within CoCooN's facilities and at leading synchrotron centers abroad, perform script-based data analysis of large datasets (Python proficiency required), publish findings in international journals, present at conferences, supervise MSc students, and contribute to departmental teaching.
Applicants must hold a Master of Science degree in physics, chemistry, engineering physics, chemical engineering, or a related discipline by the appointment date. Students graduating in the current academic year are eligible. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in nanofabrication, nanopatterning, thin film deposition, and spectroscopy, as well as strong oral and written communication skills and fluency in English. Motivation and commitment to complete a 4-year PhD project are expected.
The fellowship is a full-time position, initially for 12 months and extendable up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances, and the grant is free of personal income tax. Ghent University staff enjoy numerous benefits, including training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
To apply, submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, full CV, and diploma (if available) to [email protected] with the subject line 'Application selective ALD PhD'. Applications not following the format will not be considered. The position remains open until filled. For further information, contact Prof. Jolien Dendooven ([email protected]).
Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. Everyone is encouraged to apply.
