About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, focusing on cutting-edge HIV cure research within the HIV Cure Research Center (HCRC). Led by Prof. Dr. Linos Vandekerckhove and Prof. Dr. Sarah Gerlo, the HCRC is internationally recognized for its translational research, integrating clinical studies with advanced molecular and computational approaches to address the global challenge of HIV persistence and latency.
The research project centers on the in situ study of HIV reservoirs in human tissues, utilizing state-of-the-art technologies such as CITEseq and spatial omics. The findings will be validated through in vitro models and humanized mice, aiming to uncover novel molecular mechanisms that drive HIV persistence. The ultimate goal is to identify new therapeutic targets and develop innovative strategies for sustained viral remission and a potential cure for HIV infection.
As a doctoral fellow, you will join a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, and data experts, collaborating with leading international universities and biotech companies. Your responsibilities will include patient contact, coordination of sample collection, integration of clinical data, and hands-on research in both wet-lab and bioinformatics domains. The position offers a dynamic environment where continuous learning, development, and teamwork are highly valued.
Applicants must hold a Master degree in Medicine, as direct patient interaction and clinical data handling are integral to the role. A strong interest in infectiology, immunology, and virology is essential, with previous experience in these fields considered an asset. Candidates should possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, motivation to acquire bioinformatics expertise (e.g., R), and proficiency in wet-lab techniques such as flow cytometry, microscopy, and molecular biology. Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken, are required, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Flexibility, stress-resistance, and organizational skills are important, as is a willingness to engage in international collaboration and short-term stays abroad.
The fellowship is initially offered for 22 months (11+11), with the possibility of extension up to a total of 48 months following a positive evaluation. The funding package includes 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is free of personal income tax. If a competitive FWO PhD grant is not awarded, alternative backup funding will be provided. Ghent University staff enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities, generous holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
To apply, submit your CV (including percentile ranking), motivation letter (max 1 page), copies of degrees and transcripts, translation of diploma if necessary, previous research experience and publication list (if applicable), and contact details of 1–2 references to Prof. Dr. Sarah Gerlo ([email protected]) or Prof. Dr. Linos Vandekerckhove ([email protected]). Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for FWO PhD fellowships. The application deadline is February 7, 2026. For further information, contact the supervisors directly.
This position is open to all qualified candidates, and Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity in recruitment.
