About this position

Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, invites applications for a doctoral fellow position in the Department of Electronics and Information Systems, specifically within the IDLab (Internet technology and Data science Lab, UGent-imec) research group. The position focuses on mechanistic neural modelling using in vitro Multi-Electrode Arrays (MEAs), a cutting-edge method in neuroscience for measuring the electrical activity of cultured neuronal networks. The research aims to advance quantitative mechanistic models that capture the biological dynamics of neuronal cultures, enabling principled inference from experimental data and inspiring novel paradigms in information processing and learning.

IDLab is a core research group of imec, renowned for its innovation in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, and collaborates globally with universities, research centres, and industry. The lab offers a unique research infrastructure and a vibrant environment with over 50 professors, 60 postdocs, 200 PhD researchers, and 40 staff members across 20 teams.

The doctoral project will involve supporting ongoing research on mechanistic modelling and Bayesian parameter inference from in vitro neural models. Tasks include combining theory, simulation, and data-driven methods, collaborating closely with researchers developing neural cultures and models, designing new experiments through model-based analysis and simulation, discovering efficient modelling paradigms, performing parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification using Bayesian techniques, and investigating data representations for high-dimensional recordings. The results will be disseminated through publications in top journals and conferences, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a doctoral degree.

Applicants must hold or expect to hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, with first class performance. A strong interest in modelling bio-inspired or biological systems, commitment to a 4-year PhD, solid background in AI (machine learning, neural networks, reinforcement learning, dynamic modelling, Bayesian inference), and experience in software development (Python/PyTorch, C/C++) are required. Knowledge of numerical simulation of differential equations is advantageous. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, organizational ability, excellent communication, teamwork, responsibility, autonomy, and fluent English. Both young graduates and those with short industrial experience are welcome.

The offer includes a full-time doctoral fellowship for up to 48 months, starting July 1st, 2026 at the earliest, with salary at 100% of net AAP member salary based on family status and seniority, tax-free grant, and a comprehensive benefits package including training, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

To apply, submit your application via the online link. For further information, contact Prof. Kris Demuynck or Dr. Aranka Steyaert by email with the subject 'Application: MEA-based mechanistic neural modelling'. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview, with remote interviews available for international applicants. The application deadline is September 30, 2026.
