About this position

Ghent University’s IDLab (Internet technology and Data science Lab, UGent-imec) is advertising a PhD position in multi-electrode array (MEA) based mechanistic neural modelling.

The project focuses on in vitro neural cultures measured with MEAs, with the goal of building quantitative mechanistic models that capture biological dynamics and support principled inference from experimental data. The work combines neuroscience, machine learning, Bayesian inference, dynamic modelling, and efficient simulation of differential equations. A key part of the role is to develop parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification methods, investigate useful data representations/embeddings for high-dimensional recordings, and help design new experiments through model-based analysis.

The position is embedded in IDLab at Ghent University, within a research environment active in connectivity and data science & AI, and connected to imec. The successful candidate will work closely with researchers developing the in vitro cultures and models, disseminate results through publications and conferences, and work toward a doctoral degree.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field; strong academic performance; solid background in AI and/or Bayesian inference; programming experience in Python/PyTorch, C/C++, or similar; fluent English; strong analytical and organizational skills.

Funding: full-time doctoral fellowship for 12 months initially, extendable up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances, with standard Ghent University benefits.
