About this position
Ghent University, a top 100 global institution, offers a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering. The position is based at the Energy & Systems Laboratory (EnSy) and is part of the Flanders Make research project IMVEP, which spans four years. The project centers on the development and validation of multilevel inverters for high-power electric motor applications, specifically targeting high DC bus voltages up to 1200 V. The main objective is to enhance system efficiency and increase the continuous power density of electric motors, while exploring the elimination of sine-wave filters typically required for conventional inverters.
As a PhD fellow, you will focus on the T-type (3-level) inverter topology, contributing to simulation, modeling, and integration with a 100 kW, 20,000 rpm electric motor. Your responsibilities include designing, building, and debugging inverter PCBs, implementing control software on a rapid prototyping platform, developing a safe test setup, and conducting experimental measurements. The role is highly multidisciplinary, combining aspects of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and power electronics.
Applicants should possess a Master of Science in engineering (technology), preferably in electromechanical or electrical engineering. Strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience in power electronics are essential, along with familiarity with experimental research and simulation software. Additional expertise in electric motor design and control is advantageous. Good English communication skills and a passion for academic research in an international context are required.
The fellowship is initially offered for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to 48 months following a positive evaluation. The grant covers 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The research will be conducted at the Electrical Energy Laboratory in the Tech Lane Ghent Science Park, Zwijnaarde.
To apply, send your cover letter and CV by email to [email protected] and [email protected]. Reference letters are not required at this stage; they will be solicited if needed. Suitable candidates will be invited for an interview and may be given a small assignment. The starting date is flexible, with preference for early commencement. For further information about the PhD topic, contact [email protected].
