About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Structural Engineering and Building Materials. This position offers an exciting opportunity to conduct independent research on the experimental and numerical characterisation of selective paste intrusion particle-bed printed concrete 3D infill patterns under single and multiaxial loading conditions. The research will involve performing experimental tests, including digital image correlation-based analysis, and developing numerical models using both continuum and discrete approaches. The ultimate goal is to obtain a simplified homogeneous material model for selective paste intrusion particle-bed printed concrete infill patterns, contributing to advancements in structural engineering and materials science.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic environment at Ghent University, one of Belgium’s leading institutions with a strong commitment to research and education. The Department TW14 offers state-of-the-art facilities and a collaborative atmosphere, supporting innovative research in structural engineering, materials science, and related fields. The position is supervised by Professor Wouter De Corte, who provides guidance and expertise in advanced concrete testing and modelling.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in civil engineering, civil engineering technology, architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, or an equivalent qualification. Preferred skills include experience with concrete or cement-based single or multiaxial load tests, digital image correlation analysis, advanced non-linear finite element analysis (such as CDP modelling in Abaqus or LDPM modelling in MARS), automatic data processing, and programming skills in Python, C++, or Matlab. Excellent English language skills are required, and Dutch language proficiency is desirable. Candidates who do not hold a degree from an English-language program must provide an English B2 Certificate. Eligibility for enrolment in the doctoral program is mandatory.
The fellowship is offered for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 48 months following a positive evaluation. The salary is set at 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University staff enjoy a range of benefits, including training and education opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
To apply, submit your CV, diploma copy, and motivation letter to Professor Wouter De Corte at [email protected] by July 31, 2026. Late applications will not be considered. For further information about the vacancy, contact Professor De Corte at the same email address. Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.
