About this position

Postdoc opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in civil engineering, structural mechanics, experimental solid mechanics, and masonry quay wall research.

The TU Delft Structural Mechanics group is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to help design a first-of-its-kind large-scale experimental campaign on historic masonry quay walls. The project focuses on understanding the residual service life and failure response of Dutch canal-city infrastructure, especially in cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Den Bosch.

Your work will combine a preliminary numerical study, identification of representative loading scenarios, design of a novel large-scale test setup, and verification through trial tests. The research is part of the CANALS project funded by the Dutch science foundation (NWO) and is connected to an ongoing project on the structural assessment of historical masonry infrastructure supported by the AMS Institute and the Municipality of Amsterdam.

The position is supervised by Dr Rita Esposito and Dr Francesco Messali in the TU Delft Masonry Lab (Macrolab/Stevinlaboratorium). The role is suited to a motivated researcher who enjoys teamwork and wants to contribute to experimental and computational research on masonry structures.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in civil engineering or a related field; interest in experimental solid mechanics; preferably experience with large-scale testing; strong communication skills; and experience with nonlinear finite element analysis of masonry as an advantage.

Funding and conditions: 24-month temporary postdoc contract, 36-40 hours per week, salary range €3546-€5538, with standard Dutch university employment benefits.

Application deadline: 8 November 2026. Apply online and upload a motivation letter, CV with key publications, and a one-page summary of your PhD thesis.
