About this position
ETH Zurich’s Center for AI Value in the Technology Marketing Group is recruiting a doctoral researcher for a PhD position in customer-facing AI in marketing and service. The project sits at the intersection of generative AI, conversational AI, multimodal AI, marketing analytics, and service operations, with a strong emphasis on experimental and quantitative empirical research.
The position is built around three research streams conducted with industry partners: (1) prompt granularity in AI voice agents, studying how tightly firms should prescribe what an AI agent says; (2) emotional grounding in AI-to-human handovers, examining how customers experience transfers from voice agents to human employees; and (3) multimodal prediction of marketing content performance, using text and image embeddings to predict social media engagement before publication.
The successful candidate will design and run controlled experiments, including live voice interaction studies, extend LLM-based transcript coding pipelines, analyse experimental and operational data, and help prepare field experiments with partner organisations. The role also involves working with multimodal embedding models and machine learning methods for content performance prediction, presenting results at conferences, and contributing to teaching and supervision of Master’s theses.
Applicants should hold an MSc, MA, or MPhil in business administration, computer science, or a related field such as psychology, mathematics, engineering, physics, or statistics. Strong interest in experimental research and quantitative methods is essential, along with excellent English communication and writing skills. The post specifically seeks candidates currently residing in Europe.
The appointment is based at ETH Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland. It is offered as a competitive one-year contract, extendable up to six years, with generous travel and research allowances and access to substantial on-premises GPU infrastructure. Applications are accepted until the position is filled.
To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, and university diplomas/transcripts via the ETH Zurich online application portal. Questions about the position can be directed to Sebastian Tillmanns at [email protected].
