About this position

ETH Zurich is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher / project lead for a cross-border, interdisciplinary research project on Virtual Reality. The position is based at the Chair of Technology Marketing at ETH Zurich and is jointly hosted with the Professorship of Marketing & Technology at TUM Campus Munich. The project is funded through the SNSF/DFG WEAVE scheme and examines how people perceive time and space in immersive virtual environments.

This is a senior, leadership-oriented postdoctoral role for a researcher who wants to combine independent scholarship with scientific coordination and mentoring. The successful candidate will work closely with the principal investigators at ETH Zurich and TUM, help develop the research agenda, refine study designs, coordinate shared experiments, and co-author publications aimed at top international journals. The role also includes day-to-day scientific mentorship for two doctoral researchers and collaboration with international co-authors and industry partners.

The project sits at the intersection of psychology, technology, and human-computer interaction, with a strong emphasis on VR research. Applicants should ideally bring prior experience with virtual reality, particularly research related to perception, and be comfortable handling quantitative analyses and advanced experimental work. Familiarity with tools such as Unity, Unreal, or eye tracking is advantageous, though deep engineering expertise is not required.

Eligibility highlights include a completed or near-completed PhD in human-computer interaction, psychology, quantitative marketing, information systems, or a closely related field; strong publication potential; advanced quantitative skills in R, Python, or Stata; excellent English communication; and a collaborative, mentoring-oriented mindset. German is helpful but not mandatory.

The appointment is a fixed-term postdoctoral position (100%) with a planned duration of three years. Compensation follows ETH Zurich / SNF postdoctoral salary scales. The earliest starting date is October 2026. In addition to a high-visibility interdisciplinary research setting, the role offers access to external quantitative training opportunities and support for research stays in Germany or abroad.

To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF containing a cover letter outlining motivation, research vision, and VR experience; a CV with publication list or working papers; and two academic references. Applications must be submitted through the ETH Zurich online portal. Questions about the position can be directed to Thomas Scheurer at [email protected].
