About this position

The University of Luxembourg is recruiting a Doctoral researcher in Engineering Science within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) and the ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction. The project is centered on the structural behaviour and performance of Steel-Timber Composite (STC) beams, an innovative hybrid structural system that combines steel members with cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels.

The doctoral research aims to improve understanding of the mechanical behaviour of STC beams and to develop reliable design methodologies and engineering solutions. The work is expected to integrate experimental research, numerical modelling, and analytical approaches in support of efficient structural design concepts and future design standards. The chair is active in European research and standardization networks, including ECCS and CEN, offering the successful candidate a strong connection to academia, industry, and code-development bodies.

The project is supervised within the research environment led by Prof. Christoph Odenbreit, with additional contact person Dr. Teodora Bogdan. The position is suitable for candidates interested in structural engineering, steel-timber composite systems, finite element modelling, and experimental laboratory work.

Applicants should have a Diploma or Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Desired background includes knowledge of steel and timber material behaviour, creep, shrinkage, and moisture effects, as well as familiarity with ULS/SLS design concepts. Experience in structural dynamics or vibration analysis is an advantage, and skills in finite element modelling (e.g. ABAQUS) and probabilistic methods are beneficial. The role also requires a strong interest in laboratory experimentation and willingness to enroll as a PhD student at Uni.lu.

Language requirements include very good English (B2) and, as an asset, B1 German or French. Academic eligibility additionally requires B2-level proficiency in the thesis language.

The doctoral contract is fixed term for 36 months, full time (40 hours per week). The yearly gross salary is EUR 44,531 for every doctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg.
