About this position

Empa in Switzerland is advertising a fully funded PhD position in multi-scale modelling and experimental assessment of volumetrically prestressed concrete. The project is part of the EU Horizon research and innovation initiative SURPASS (Smart and Sustainable Resilient Performance-based Cementitious Composites for Adaptive Strengthening and Repair System), which focuses on adaptive strengthening and repair strategies for ageing infrastructure in aggressive environments.

The PhD will work on structural engineering, concrete structures, nonlinear finite element modelling, structural mechanics, 3D concrete printing, and shape memory alloys. Research tasks include volumetric prestressing of cast and 3D-printable overlays using Fe-SMA fibres, meso-scale finite element modelling of prestressing mechanisms, structural-scale simulation for surrogate-model development and digital-twin support, and large-scale experimental assessment of overlays for non-planar structures such as tunnel linings, arch intrados, and curved bridge soffits.

The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related engineering field and has a strong background in nonlinear FE modelling, structural mechanics, and concrete structures. Experience or interest in 3D concrete printing is important. Experience with small- and large-scale experiments and knowledge of shape memory alloys are advantageous. Excellent English is mandatory; German is a plus.

The position is based at Empa Dübendorf, with thesis direction by Prof. Dr. Eleni Chatzi (ETH Zurich) and day-to-day supervision by Prof. Dr. Moslem Shahverdi and Dr. Saim Raza at Empa. The role is available as soon as possible and must be filled by 1 March 2027.
