About this position

The University of Luxembourg is offering a doctoral researcher position in Quantum Communications and Networking within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT). This is a PhD opportunity focused on experimental quantum communications, with work embedded in ongoing European initiatives and projects.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design, implementation, and characterization of quantum communication systems, with particular emphasis on optical communications, free-space optical (FSO) links, and the realization of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. Day-to-day research activities will include optical bench work, development and control of experimental setups, data acquisition and analysis, and publication of results in peer-reviewed venues. The position is based at the Kirchberg Campus in Luxembourg and is offered as a full-time fixed-term doctoral contract for 36 months.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Telecommunications, Quantum Technologies, or a closely related field. Strong laboratory experience in experimental quantum optics and/or photonics is expected, along with familiarity with free-space and/or fiber optics. Knowledge of FSO communication concepts such as beam propagation, pointing, acquisition and tracking, and atmospheric effects is important, as are programming and instrument-control skills in Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.

The position is supervised by senior researchers in the group, with contact names listed as Dr. Seid Koudia and Dr. Jorge Querol. The role requires a genuine interest in doctoral research, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. English proficiency at C1 level is required, and applicants must also demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis.

Funding is provided through a doctoral researcher contract, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 43,445 for a full-time appointment.
