About this position
Doctoral student in optical quantum network at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
This PhD project is hosted by the Division of Communications, Antennas and Optical Networks, within the Optical Networks (ON) group. The group works on network architecture, optimization, control and management, datacenter and mobile transport networks, sustainability, reliability, security, survivability, converged fiber-wireless systems, and optical quantum networks.
The project focuses on designing and developing optical switching testbeds and networking protocols for quantum networks. The research aims to enable secure, low-latency, and scalable communication between distributed quantum information processing platforms. The topic combines quantum communication with high-speed optical networking, with emphasis on entanglement-aware routing, quantum compatibility, system-level performance evaluation, and hybrid simulation. The student will develop prototype optical switching solutions and simulation frameworks for future quantum networking and distributed quantum computing architectures.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Communications, or a related field; a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted for candidates educated outside Sweden. Strong English communication skills and solid foundations in classical networking, routing, switching, protocol design, SDN, optical networking, and system-level modeling are required. Helpful additional experience includes quantum communication principles, quantum network security, physical-layer aware design, quantum tools such as QuTiP or Qiskit, optical switching hardware, photonic signal processing, and publication experience in relevant areas.
The position includes advanced courses in the Graduate School of Electrical Engineering and Microtechnology and Nanoscience, independent research, scholarly communication, and some teaching or other duties corresponding to up to 20% of working hours. The appointment is fully funded from the start, for four years, with the possibility of extension to five years if teaching is included. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the period, and a valid residence permit must be available by the study start date.
Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files through the online form. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, a brief introduction and motivation, and bachelor’s and available master’s thesis documents with transcripts. The deadline is 2026-07-31. For questions, contact Rui Lin at [email protected].
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
