Doctoral Researcher in the MSCA Cofund DP-FOBI Doctoral Programme, Forest Sciences University of Eastern Finland in Finland

The University of Eastern Finland is offering a four-year Doctoral Researcher position within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND Doctoral Programme for Advancing Forest-Based Bioeconomy (DP-FOBI). Based at the Joensuu campus, this opportunity focuses on developing sustainability assessment models for forest-based businesses, including SMEs, MNEs, and their value networks. The research theme addresses the urgent need for effective and efficient sustainability assessment methods, integrating systemic understanding of sustainability transitions in the forest bioeconomy. Quantitative measurement criteria and assessment models will be developed, with special attention to forest-based value creation and externalities such as ecosystem services, carbon capture, scenic beauty, social and cultural aspects, and biodiversity.

Employment is for a fixed term of four years, with a total working time of 1,612 hours per year and a four-month probationary period. The salary follows the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions system: living allowance (EUR 3,200/month), mobility allowance (EUR 87/month), family allowance (EUR 300/month for eligible researchers), paid leave, holiday bonus, travel allowance (EUR 1,500/year), additional travel allowance (EUR 10,500 total), research costs (EUR 6,000 total), and special needs allowance/support if required.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in forestry, business administration, engineering, or a closely related field, and must not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application. The MSCA mobility rule applies (less than 12 months in Finland during the past 3 years), and language skills requirements of the Doctoral Programme in Science, Forestry and Technology at UEF must be fulfilled. Candidates should demonstrate basic understanding of sustainable business and forest-based value creation, interest in quantitative methods for sustainability assessment, and ability to integrate relevant data sources. Proof of English proficiency is required if not evident from academic credentials. Official English translations of degree certificates must be provided if originals are not in English.

At the time of signing the employment contract, the recruited researcher must enroll in the UEF Doctoral Programme in Science, Forestry and Technology, leading to a doctoral degree. Admission requires a research plan, prepared in collaboration with supervisors after acceptance to DP-FOBI. Main tasks include dissertation research, completion of required doctoral studies, participation in DP-FOBI training, preparation of individual study and career development plans, and engagement in secondments, research visits, collaborative projects, and dissemination activities.
