The University of Eastern Finland is offering a four-year Doctoral Researcher position within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND Doctoral Programme for Advancing Forest-Based Bioeconomy (DP-FOBI). Based at the Joensuu campus, this interdisciplinary opportunity focuses on the contested conceptualizations of forests in bioeconomy-related discourses. The research project aims to analyze how forests and nature are represented through rhetorical, metaphorical, and affective expressions across public discourses, including media, policy documents, advertisements, and works of art. By examining these conceptualizations, the project seeks to develop interpretive tools for more effective engagement in societal and environmental discussions.

The position is full-time for four years, with a total working time of 1,612 hours per year and a four-month probationary period. The salary follows the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions system, including a living allowance (€3,200/month), mobility allowance (€87/month), family allowance (€300/month for eligible researchers), paid leave, and a summer holiday bonus. Additional funding includes a travel allowance (€1,500/year), an extra travel allowance (€10,500 total) for secondments and short visits, research costs (€6,000 total), and special needs support if required.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in languages, translation studies, linguistics, media studies, communication studies, cultural studies, environmental humanities, or a closely related field. Candidates must not have a doctoral degree at the time of application, must meet the MSCA mobility rule (less than 12 months in Finland in the past 3 years), and fulfill the language requirements of the Doctoral Programme of the Philosophical Faculty at UEF. Excellent written and oral English skills are required, with proficiency in additional languages and prior methodological knowledge of language data analysis considered advantageous. Proof of English proficiency is required if not evident from academic credentials, and official English translations of degree certificates must be provided if originals are not in English.

The main responsibilities include conducting dissertation research, completing doctoral studies, participating in DP-FOBI training, preparing an individual study and career development plan, and engaging in secondments, research visits, collaborative projects, and dissemination activities. Admission to the doctoral programme requires a research plan, to be developed with supervisors after acceptance.
