Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student), Inhalation Toxicology University of Eastern Finland in Finland

The University of Eastern Finland is recruiting a Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) to join the Inhalation Toxicology Laboratory (INTOLA) at the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences on the Kuopio campus. This is a fixed-term, full-time PhD position starting on 1 November 2026 (or as agreed) and continuing until 31 August 2030. The role is located in Kuopio, Finland, and is part of the Novel Frontiers in Inhalation Toxicology: The Human Respiratory Tract in Space Environments (NFITSE) project.

The project is an Academy Fellowship project funded by the Research Council of Finland. The successful candidate will contribute to doctoral studies and hands-on research in inhalation toxicology, cell biology, and space health. The research focuses on how simulated microgravity influences respiratory biology and toxicological responses, including immune responses and epithelial barrier integrity, using advanced human in vitro models. The work includes extensive cell culture, use of multiple respiratory cell lines and co-culture systems, operation of a microgravity simulation platform, and analysis of toxicological endpoints.

The position offers a strong interdisciplinary environment and opportunities to take part in research planning, scientific writing, grant applications, collaborative projects, and supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s students. The role also provides collaboration opportunities with national and international partners and contributes to building space toxicology as a new research area at UEF.

Applicants should be eligible for postgraduate studies and hold a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent in biochemistry, cell biology, environmental exposure sciences, or a related field. Students nearing completion of their Master’s degree may also apply, provided they finish their degree and submit the certificate by 14 October 2026. A good command of written and spoken English is required. Experience in laboratory work, aerosol measurement, cell culture, communication, presentation, data analysis, and working in international, multidisciplinary teams will be considered an advantage.

The salary follows the Finnish university salary system. At the start of employment, the total monthly salary is approximately EUR 2,710–2,845, depending on the stage of doctoral studies and personal performance.
