Doctoral researcher positions in the Doctoral Programme in History, Culture and Arts Studies (Juno) University of Turku in Finland

The University of Turku’s Faculty of Humanities is inviting applications for contract-based, fixed-term doctoral researcher positions in the Doctoral Programme in History, Culture and Arts Studies (Juno). This is a full-time PhD opportunity designed for doctoral research and doctoral studies, with a working arrangement that allows the dissertation to be completed within the planned timetable.

The position starts on 1 January 2027 or by agreement during 2027. The appointment can last for up to four years, but not beyond 31 December 2030. The role is UTUGS-funded and is intended to support your progress through the doctorate while keeping teaching and other duties limited to a small share of annual working time.

Juno is an interdisciplinary doctoral programme combining historical approaches, cultural analysis, and critical art studies. It brings together a broad set of research fields, including musicology, museology, cultural history, history of art, cultural studies, film studies, performing arts, and visual arts. The programme is aimed at candidates interested in cultural change and the study of history, arts, and culture in an interdisciplinary environment.

Applicants must hold an active doctoral study right at the University of Turku in the Faculty of Humanities, Doctoral Programme in History, Culture and Arts Studies (Juno). If you do not yet have the doctoral study right, you must apply for it in Studyinfo (Opintopolku) by 2026-09-08. The call is open to applicants pursuing their first doctoral degree only, and applicants must not have previously held a four-year full-time UTUGS-funded contract. The position requires working in Finland, with the workplace in Turku or Pori.

Funding is based on the University of Turku salary system for teaching and research staff. The salary for a doctoral researcher is roughly €2,400 to €3,300 per month, depending on the stage of the doctorate, experience, and skills. The position includes flexible working hours, occupational health care, training opportunities, and support for international researchers.
