About this position
Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is offering a doctoral researcher position in soil carbon modeling within the Academy of Finland’s 4-year DECODE project (Decoding ecosystem carbon and organic matter dynamics as an ecosystem property). The project focuses on how the temperature sensitivity of soil organic carbon decomposition varies with organic matter quality and microbial community composition in European soils.
The successful candidate will work on Bayesian data assimilation and model development around the Q-model, using large datasets such as Holisoils, LUCAS, and ICP Forests. The research aims to improve climate models by providing better estimates of future soil CO₂ emissions and ecosystem feedbacks. The work includes integrating diverse data sources, developing models, using CSC supercomputing infrastructure, scaling results to the European level, and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
The position is based at Luke in Helsinki within an international research team. Doctoral studies will be completed through the University of Tampere, and the project includes collaboration with several European research organisations as well as a research visit to the University of Oslo.
Applicants should have a higher university degree in a relevant field such as applied mathematics, statistics, physics, computational science, environmental science, agriculture, ecology, or microbiology. Strong mathematical and programming skills are important, and experience with Bayesian inference, MCMC, high-performance computing, or spatial modelling is considered an advantage. English language proficiency, teamwork, and an interest in article-based doctoral research are also expected.
The position starts on 1 December 2026, or as agreed. It is a fixed-term, salaried position in Luke’s salary system, with a specific monthly salary of EUR 3014.85 plus a personal performance component. Applicants must hold a higher university degree in a relevant field such as applied mathematics, statistics, physics, computational science, environmental science, agriculture, ecology, or microbiology. Strong mathematical skills are required, including the ability to work with linear and partial differential equation systems. Good programming skills in R, Python, or similar languages are expected, along with the ability to read, write, and debug code independently. Experience with Bayesian inference, MCMC methods, high-performance computing, or spatial modelling is an asset. Knowledge of soil science is not required, but a relevant degree or strong demonstrated expertise in soil science combined with the required mathematical skills is considered an asset. Applicants should be motivated, have good communication skills, be able to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary international team, and have good spoken and written English. An interest in an article-based doctoral dissertation and previous experience contributing to scientific publications are assets.
