About this position

PhD Fellow in Terrestrial Quantitative Ecology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics, Department of Arctic and Marine Biology.

This PhD project sits at the interface of terrestrial ecosystem ecology, statistical ecology, spatio-temporal modelling, and ecological forecasting. The position is linked to the new Centre for Biodiversity Forecasting and the Northern Populations and Ecosystems research group, with collaboration across UiT, NTNU, SINTEF, Nord University, NINA, the Meteorological Institute, and the Norwegian Polar Institute.

The research aims to develop and assess near-term ecological forecasts of Essential Biodiversity Variables by integrating existing single-species, functional-group, and ecosystem models for Arctic and subarctic terrestrial systems. The project focuses on tundra and subarctic birch forest ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, reindeer husbandry, harvesting, renewable energy, and adaptive monitoring. The candidate will work with quantitative ecologists, statisticians, climate scientists, and managers, and is expected to participate in field work.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in statistical ecology, statistics with an applied environmental focus, or ecology with a strong quantitative focus; experience with statistical methods for spatio-temporal modelling and forecasting; documented English proficiency; and admission eligibility for the PhD programme. Preferred experience includes integrating multiple data sources, Bayesian modelling, and Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

Funding: three-year PhD employment at UiT with salary according to state salary scale code 1017 (gross annual salary NOK 565,000 in a 100% position), plus pension scheme membership.

Application deadline: 15 September 2026. Apply via Jobbnorge and upload the required documents: cover letter, CV, diplomas and transcripts, translations if needed, grading explanation for foreign education, proof of English proficiency, references, and master’s thesis/other academic works. Applicants near completion of the master’s degree may still apply with a draft thesis and confirmation of expected completion.

Location: Tromsø, Norway.
