About this position

Join the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology for a fully funded doctoral position focused on advanced catalysis for sustainable energy conversion. This project aims to develop innovative catalytic routes for transforming waste CO₂ into renewable fuels, combining experimental research with real-world energy impact. The department offers a vibrant international environment, with expertise spanning fundamental chemistry, materials science, renewable energy, and chemical engineering processing. Close collaboration with industry ensures both fundamental and applied research challenges are addressed.

The research project centers on creating efficient, robust systems for future electrofuel production, supporting the transition to renewable, circular carbon technologies. You will develop and test advanced catalysts under realistic conditions, integrate findings with process modelling, and contribute to the development of process concepts by linking experimental results to techno-economic assessments. The work involves synthesis, modification, and detailed characterization of catalyst materials, operation and maintenance of high-pressure continuous reactors, and systematic studies to understand catalyst activity, stability, and regeneration.

As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Chemical Engineering, develop your own scientific concepts, and communicate research results both verbally and in writing. The position includes teaching duties or other responsibilities corresponding to 20% of working hours, potentially extending the appointment up to five years. You will benefit from a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025), full employee benefits, and a dynamic working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden. Chalmers is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, offering Swedish language courses and support for international employees.

Eligibility requires a Master’s degree (120 credits) or a Master’s degree (60 credits) in Chemical Engineering or a related field. For students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory. Experience in catalysis, materials synthesis, reaction engineering, operation of high-pressure/high-temperature reactors, material characterization, and process modelling tools (Aspen Plus, Matlab/Python) is advantageous. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Include your CV, personal letter, motivation, and transcripts. Incomplete applications and applications sent by email will not be considered. Contact details to references will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is April 27, 2026. For questions, contact Professors Derek Creaser ([email protected]) or Louise Olsson ([email protected]).

Chalmers University of Technology is renowned for its research and education in engineering and natural sciences, with a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and collaboration with industry and society.
