About this position

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden is recruiting a Doctoral student in Advanced microscopy of Zr alloys for nuclear reactors (REF 2026-0343).

The project is based in the Division of Microstructure Physics and focuses on experimental investigations of engineering materials using advanced characterization techniques. The research uses electron microscopy, atom probe tomography (APT), synchrotron and neutron scattering to study microstructure-property relationships and degradation phenomena.

The specific project investigates the corrosion behaviour of a novel zirconium alloy for nuclear fuel cladding. The goal is to understand corrosion mechanisms at the atomic scale and support the development of next-generation nuclear materials for safer and more reliable nuclear power.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering is required; for applicants educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong English communication skills and experience in materials science are mandatory. Experience with electron microscopy and APT, plus interest in nuclear technology, will strengthen the application.

Funding and terms: the position is fully funded from the start. It is a fixed-term appointment for four years, with teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours, which can extend the position to five years. Starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (from May 1, 2026).

Application: submit the application in English as PDF files via the online form. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, and bachelor’s and, if available, master’s thesis with transcripts. Applications sent by email are not considered. Deadline: August 14, 2026.

Supervisor/contact: Professor Mattias Thuvander ([email protected]).
