About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is recruiting a doctoral student in Electrical Engineering focused on electrical motor reliability within the TERMINATOR project, funded by FFI.

The project studies how fast-switching silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) power electronics influence long-term motor reliability. A central question is how fast voltage transitions (high dv/dt of 20–50 kV/µs) create electro-thermal stresses that accelerate stator insulation dielectric aging and bearing damage.

As a doctoral student, you will work in the Electrical Machines and Drives group at KTH, in close collaboration with industrial partners Traton AB, ABB AB, and ABB Robotics Sweden AB. The work combines experimental electrical engineering, reliability testing, and data-driven modeling.

Planned research tasks include developing automated laboratory platforms for controlled electro-thermal aging experiments; carrying out accelerated aging tests on stator insulation and bearings; analyzing experimental data to build predictive lifetime models using statistics, signal processing, and machine learning; and validating degradation models on laboratory motor test benches under inverter excitation.

The position is supervised by Associate Professor Luca Peretti, and the report line is also to him. This is a full-time doctoral employment leading to a doctoral degree. The position is based in Stockholm, Sweden, and the first day of employment is according to agreement, with autumn 2026 suggested.

Eligibility follows Swedish doctoral admission rules: applicants must hold a second-cycle degree such as a master's degree, or equivalent coursework/knowledge meeting the stated higher-education credit requirements. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. The selection process also values practical lab experience in power electronics, electric drives, or high-frequency measurements; programming skills in MATLAB and Python; understanding of stator insulation systems or bearings; and experience with statistical analysis, signal processing, or machine learning.

The employment is temporary and follows KTH doctoral student salary conditions. The announcement states that applications must include diplomas and grades, certified translations if needed, proof of language qualifications, a CV, a concise motivation letter, and representative publications or technical reports.

Applications are submitted through KTH's recruitment system. The last application date is 2026-09-17.

English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Preferred qualifications include lab experience in power electronics, electric drives, or high-frequency measurements; programming skills in MATLAB and Python for automated control and data analysis; understanding of stator insulation systems or bearings; experience with statistical data analysis, signal processing, or machine learning; and good collaborative and English communication skills. Strong personal qualities such as goal orientation, perseverance, independence, professionalism, and ability to work on complex issues are important.

How to apply
