About this position

Doctoral student in Infection Biophysics and Microengineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

This PhD project is hosted by the Hannebelle Lab in the Division of Biophysics, Department of Applied Physics, with a research environment connected to SciLifeLab. The project focuses on the biophysics of schistosome skin infection, an important neglected tropical disease affecting more than 200 million people worldwide. Infection begins when parasites penetrate intact human skin from freshwater, and this multi-hour process is still not well understood from a physical and mechanistic perspective.

The successful doctoral student will use in-vivo-mimetic systems to study how schistosome parasites find, penetrate, migrate through, and exit the skin, and which physical mechanisms govern each step. The work is highly interdisciplinary and combines microfluidics, organ-on-chip platforms, custom microscopy, cell culture, 3D printing, hardware design, and biophysical modeling. The group emphasizes curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new methods rather than requiring applicants to already master every technique.

Supervision is proposed by Martin Viklund and Melanie Hannebelle. The position is a full-time temporary doctoral appointment with salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement. The role is based in Stockholm and the advertised start date is 1 October 2026.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must meet Swedish doctoral admission requirements through a second-cycle degree or equivalent prior studies. A background in infection biology, biophysics, applied physics, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field is preferred. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. KTH also looks for strong personal skills, including independence, collaboration, professional conduct, perseverance, and the ability to handle complex problems.

How to apply: submit your application through KTH’s recruitment system. Required documents include diplomas and transcripts, proof of language requirements, a CV, a motivation/application letter of up to two pages, and representative publications or technical reports. The closing date is 2026-09-12.

What's required

Applicants must have basic eligibility for postgraduate education, meaning a second-cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 second-cycle credits, or equivalent knowledge. A Master’s degree in infection biology, biophysics, applied physics, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field is preferred. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. The selection process also values goal orientation, perseverance, ability to work independently and collaboratively, a professional approach, and the ability to analyze complex issues; prior experience with microfluidics, cell culture, parasite handling, custom microscopy, 3D printing, or modeling is beneficial but not required in all areas.
