KTH Royal Institute of Technology is advertising a doctoral student position in Cell and Molecular Biology Research within the third-cycle subject Biological Physics. The project is hosted by the AICell Lab in the Department of Applied Physics and is connected to Science for Life Laboratory. The lab combines wet-lab cell biology with automated experimental platforms and AI-driven analysis to study biological systems in an interdisciplinary environment.

The research group, led by Wei Ouyang, is opening two biology-focused doctoral positions. The projects will be shaped together with the selected student at the start of the studies, allowing room to align the research with the student’s scientific interests. The work is centered on experimental cell biology and includes cell culture, perturbation studies, microscopy, and related molecular biology methods, together with interpretation of results in a broader biological context.

Doctoral students will work closely with colleagues in automation, computation, and AI-driven analysis. The position offers the chance to contribute to publications and to broader scientific dialogue in cell and molecular biology while developing skills at the interface of biology, physics, and data-driven experimentation. Supervision is proposed by Professor Hjalmar Brismar and Assistant Professor Wei Ouyang.

Eligibility requires a second-cycle degree or equivalent, with special eligibility in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedicine, biophysics, or a closely related life-science field. Applicants must also meet the English requirement equivalent to English B/6. The selection process gives weight to a strong biological foundation, practical experience with experimental biological work, willingness to collaborate across disciplines, good English communication skills, and personal qualities such as perseverance and a professional approach. Basic Python/R skills are considered merit, but are not required.

Funding and employment: the position is a full-time temporary doctoral appointment. Salary is according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement. The total employment period may not exceed the time corresponding to full-time doctoral education over four years, with renewals possible under KTH rules.
