About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Integrated Solid-State Photonics. The successful candidate will join the Integrated Solid-State Photonics Lab within the Division of Photonics at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), a vibrant and international research environment renowned for advancing quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems. The lab is dedicated to pioneering next-generation photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technologies, leveraging advanced solid-state materials—particularly rare-earth-doped materials—to realize high-performance classical and quantum light sources. These innovations enable new photonic functionalities across a broad spectral range, with applications in optical metrology, atomic clocks, data communication, and quantum technologies.

The doctoral research will be embedded in the Meta-PIX Excellence Center, funded by the Swedish Research Council, focusing on integrated meta-photonics for high-capacity optical interconnects and quantum simulations. The Division of Photonics offers expertise in optoelectronic devices, ultrafast optics, and fiber optical communication, providing direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities and fostering collaborations across academia, industry, and society.

The research project aims to develop rare-earth-doped PIC technologies for compact, scalable laser systems, advancing the performance of on-chip light sources to rival fiber-based systems. The candidate will design, test, and nanofabricate rare-earth-doped waveguide amplifiers and lasers, contribute new research ideas, and communicate scientific results. The position includes advanced coursework within the Graduate School of Microtechnology and Nanoscience and may involve teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (masterexamen, 120 credits or magisterexamen, 60 credits) in Physics, Nanotechnology, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or similar. For candidates educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal English skills, programming proficiency in Python or Matlab, and a keen interest in photonics and experimental research are required. Experience in nanotechnology (cleanroom), photonic device measurements, and familiarity with photonic integration software (Lumerical, COMSOL) are advantageous.

The position is fully funded with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and includes full employee benefits. The appointment is for four years, extendable to five years with teaching duties. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a supportive, inclusive environment, Swedish language courses, and is committed to gender equality and diversity.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Required documents include CV, personal letter, motivation statement, thesis, and transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is April 30, 2026. For questions, contact Assistant Professor Lam Tran at [email protected].

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and sustainability through global commitment and collaboration.
