Chalmers University of Technology

Doctoral student in Integrated Solid-State Photonics

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Integrated Solid-State Photonics. The successful candidate will join the Integrated Solid-State Photonics Lab within the Division of Photonics at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), a vibrant and international research environment renowned for advancing quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems. The lab is dedicated to pioneering next-generation photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technologies, leveraging advanced solid-state materials—particularly rare-earth-doped materials—to realize high-performance classical and quantum light sources. These innovations enable new photonic functionalities across a broad spectral range, with applications in optical metrology, atomic clocks, data communication, and quantum technologies. The doctoral research will be embedded in the Meta-PIX Excellence Center, funded by the Swedish Research Council, focusing on integrated meta-photonics for high-capacity optical interconnects and quantum simulations. The Division of Photonics offers expertise in optoelectronic devices, ultrafast optics, and fiber optical communication, providing direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities and fostering collaborations across academia, industry, and society. The research project aims to develop rare-earth-doped PIC technologies for compact, scalable laser systems, advancing the performance of on-chip light sources to rival fiber-based systems. The candidate will design, test, and nanofabricate rare-earth-doped waveguide amplifiers and lasers, contribute new research ideas, and communicate scientific results. The position includes advanced coursework within the Graduate School of Microtechnology and Nanoscience and may involve teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (masterexamen, 120 credits or magisterexamen, 60 credits) in Physics, Nanotechnology, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or similar. For candidates educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal English skills, programming proficiency in Python or Matlab, and a keen interest in photonics and experimental research are required. Experience in nanotechnology (cleanroom), photonic device measurements, and familiarity with photonic integration software (Lumerical, COMSOL) are advantageous. The position is fully funded with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and includes full employee benefits. The appointment is for four years, extendable to five years with teaching duties. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a supportive, inclusive environment, Swedish language courses, and is committed to gender equality and diversity. To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Required documents include CV, personal letter, motivation statement, thesis, and transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is April 30, 2026. For questions, contact Assistant Professor Lam Tran at [email protected]. Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and sustainability through global commitment and collaboration.

Chalmers University of Technology

Postdoc in Integrated Solid-State Photonics

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Integrated Solid-State Photonics. This opportunity is embedded within the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, renowned for advancing quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems. The Division of Photonics offers a vibrant, international research environment with direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities and expertise in optoelectronic devices, ultrafast optics, and fiber optical communication. The Integrated Solid-State Photonics Lab, a newly established group within the Division, focuses on developing next-generation photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technologies using active solid-state materials, particularly rare-earth-doped materials. The research aims to realize high-performance classical and quantum light sources, enabling new photonic functionalities across a broad spectral range from UV to mid-infrared. Applications span classical optical systems, quantum technologies, optical metrology, sensing, and data communication. Your postdoctoral research will be part of the Meta-PIX Excellence Center, funded by the Swedish Research Council, dedicated to integrated meta-photonics with applications ranging from high-capacity optical interconnects to quantum simulations. The long-term goal is to develop rare-earth-doped PIC technology for compact, high-performance, and scalable laser systems suitable for atomic clocks, optical metrology, sensing, and quantum technologies. Research activities include photonic integration of high optical quality rare-earth materials, nanofabrication, device-level design and characterization, and studying light-matter integration in nanophotonic systems. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead and conduct research in collaboration with others, develop and expand your scientific expertise, work independently and as part of a team, and contribute new research ideas to advance integrated photonics. You will supervise master’s and/or PhD students and may engage in teaching at the undergraduate or master’s level. The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector. Chalmers offers a collaborative and inclusive research environment supporting scientific independence, critical thinking, and teamwork. Employee benefits include salary, healthcare, generous parental leave, subsidized day care, and free schools. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, with initiatives such as the GENIE project. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree by the time of employment decision. Demonstrated research experience and ability are required. Preferred qualifications include expertise in photonics, optics, nanotechnology, or experimental solid-state physics, experience in building optical set-ups, photonic device design and characterization, and familiarity with software tools such as Lumerical or COMSOL. Teaching experience and potential within research and education are expected. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence is required throughout the employment. Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files via the provided application link. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is May 31, 2026. For questions, contact Assistant Professor Lam Tran at [email protected].
