About this position
Doctoral student in Nuclear Power Safety at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, in the Division of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE).
This PhD project sits in the group of Nuclear Power Safety and focuses on accident phenomena relevant to existing and future nuclear reactors, with particular emphasis on severe accident analysis and accident management for light water reactors. The research is supported by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten, SSM) and includes work with international relevance and cooperation.
The doctoral student will work on three connected research tasks: digitalizing paper-based, lookup-table-like severe accident management guidelines (SAMG); developing an AI-aided tool to diagnose plant damage state using measured and estimated data, including simulation outputs from U.S. NRC codes; and integrating the digitalized SAMG with the AI tool to improve accident management during severe accidents.
The position is supervised by Professor Weimin Ma. The successful candidate will be admitted to doctoral education in Physics with specialization in Nuclear Engineering and will be part of KTH’s research environment in nuclear science and engineering.
Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in nuclear engineering or mechanical engineering and English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. Applicants must have basic eligibility for postgraduate education under the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, normally a second-cycle degree (for example a master’s degree) or at least 240 higher education credits including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or equivalent knowledge. The applicant must have a Master’s degree in nuclear engineering or mechanical engineering. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. During selection, strong emphasis is placed on the ability to work independently, collaborate with others, maintain a professional approach, analyze complex issues, and demonstrate goal orientation and perseverance; personal skills are important.
