About this position

Doctoral student in Sustainable Satellite Networks at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden

This PhD position is based at the Department of Communication Systems within the EECS school at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. The research is closely connected to the SMART 6GSAT research center, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. The project addresses the evolution of Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks (SAGIN), focusing on dual-tier space-ground integrated networks to deliver reliable, low-latency communications across satellite mesh networks. The research aims to develop architectural concepts and AI frameworks that enable seamless, ubiquitous coverage, overcoming the vulnerabilities of terrestrial fiber-optic cables and manual network operations.

Key research themes include satellite communication theory, network optimization, and machine learning, with a highly theoretical and algorithmic approach to optimizing thousands of dynamic communication nodes. The project leverages advances in LEO mega-constellations, automation, and network-aware coordination to mitigate the impacts of orbital dynamics, space weather, and altitude densification. The work is interdisciplinary, combining elements of communication engineering, signal processing, artificial intelligence, and telecommunications engineering.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Irem Bor-Yaliniz, Dr. Cicek Cavdar, and Professor Emil Björnson. The position is fully funded, offering a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, and includes employee benefits. The employment is temporary, full-time, and can last up to four years, with annual renewals as per KTH regulations. Doctoral students may also engage in training and administrative tasks up to 20% of their role.

Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants must have a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or equivalent, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at second-cycle level). English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Selection criteria include independence, collaboration, professionalism, analytical skills, and effective English communication. Personal skills are highly valued. Security clearance may be required for certain positions.

Application Process: Applications must be submitted via KTH's recruitment system. Required documents include certified copies of diplomas, grades, language certificates, CV, application letter (max 2 pages), and representative publications or technical reports (with summaries and web links if lengthy). All documents must be translated into English or Swedish if not originally issued in these languages. Applications must be received by midnight CET/CEST on the closing date.

KTH offers a creative and dynamic environment, with good working conditions, attractive benefits, and a commitment to equality, diversity, and equal opportunities. The university is a leading international technical institution, actively advancing the transition towards a sustainable society.
