About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in the synthesis of battery materials and development of advanced electrode manufacturing. The position is based at the Division of Materials and Manufacturing within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, located in Gothenburg, Sweden. The research project aims to synthesize new battery materials and develop sustainable electrode manufacturing processes, contributing to the transition toward a sustainable future in energy storage and mobility.

As a doctoral student, you will join a dynamic, international team with strong ties to industry and academia. The division is renowned for its innovative research in materials science, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable solutions. You will be expected to design and perform experiments in various laboratories, develop hands-on skills in fabricating high-performance batteries, and communicate your scientific findings both verbally and in writing. Collaboration with academic and industrial partners is a key aspect of the project.

The position offers the opportunity to take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Materials Science, develop your own scientific concepts, and participate in teaching or other duties corresponding to 20% of working hours. The contract is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to extend to five years if teaching duties are undertaken. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 2026), and you will enjoy full employee benefits, including access to Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare.

Eligibility requirements include a Master’s degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics. For applicants educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory, as is experience in material synthesis and characterization. Personal competences such as social skills and collaborative ability are expected. Experience in the fabrication of lithium-ion batteries will strengthen your application. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.

Chalmers University of Technology is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with active projects such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence. Swedish language courses are offered to help international students settle in. The university fosters an innovative spirit and scientific excellence, with a strong focus on real-world impact and sustainability.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Required documents include your CV, personal letter, motivation, and thesis with transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is June 10, 2026.
