About this position
The Department of Physics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, is seeking two doctoral students to join the research group led by Professor Egor Babaev. The group specializes in theoretical condensed matter physics, employing a wide range of analytical and numerical methods, including effective field theory, topological solitons, statistical mechanics of phase transitions, topological systems, and advanced quantum many-body techniques. A major research focus is the emerging field of composite order, highlighted by recent experimental discoveries such as electron quadrupling condensates and topological defects with fractional magnetic flux quantum, which challenge long-standing paradigms and open new avenues for fundamental research and applications. Additional topics include quantum symmetry-breaking, topologically ordered states, unconventional phase transitions, and the use of modern computational methods like Diagrammatic Monte-Carlo to address persistent problems in the field. The group encourages collaboration with both local and international theoretical and experimental teams. Doctoral students will benefit from a dynamic, international research environment, employee benefits, and a monthly salary in accordance with KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement. The position is full-time, with a maximum duration of four years, and includes opportunities for professional development and limited teaching or administrative duties. Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent, demonstrate English proficiency (English B/6), and possess strong analytical, collaborative, and independent working skills. Applications should be submitted via KTH’s recruitment system and must include a CV, application letter, diplomas, language certificates, and representative publications. KTH is committed to equality, diversity, and a supportive study environment. The application deadline is November 12, 2025.
