About this position

Karlstad University, Department of Engineering and Physics is recruiting a Postdoc in Physics for research on Giant Rashba splitting in Pb quantum wells on metal/semiconductor surfaces. The project combines surface physics, solid state physics, materials physics, spintronics, and synchrotron research, with experimental work at MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden.

The successful candidate will contribute to the experimental and theoretical investigation of two-dimensional Pb films coupled to metal and semiconductor surfaces. The work is embedded in the Materials Physics group at Karlstad University, which studies metal/semiconductor interfaces, thin films, organic crystalline layers, and related nanoscale systems using techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy and synchrotron-based methods including ARPES and XPS. The project also includes DFT calculations to strengthen scientific and transferable skills.

This is a two-year postdoctoral position starting in 2026, with a negotiable start date. Funding is provided by the Carl Trygger Foundation, and the salary is offered as a tax-free scholarship of 30,000 SEK/month. Travel funding is included.

Eligibility highlights include a completed or near-completed PhD in surface physics or a closely related field, a strong background in condensed matter theory or quantum many-body physics, and desirable experience with STM and synchrotron techniques. DFT experience is considered an extra merit.

Apply via AcademicJobsOnline by submitting a cover letter, CV with publication list, research statement, and arranging two reference letters. Applications are reviewed until the position is filled. For questions, contact Hanmin Zhang at [email protected].
