About this position

FEUP, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, is recruiting an Entry-Level PhD Researcher for the DreamPEC project: Demonstration for reuse of effluents using abundant materials towards photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. The position is based in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in Porto, Portugal, and is offered as a fixed-term employment contract of uncertain duration, with an expected project duration of 6 months.

The research role is highly focused on photoelectrochemical hydrogen production and sits at the intersection of chemical engineering and environmental engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to the fabrication and optimization of photoelectrodes, development of oxidation electrocatalysts, integration into photoelectrodes, design and upscaling of PEC devices, and broader technology validation work including life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and social assessment. The post also includes project management, communication, dissemination, exploitation, and occasional collaboration in teaching and training.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or a related area, awarded within the last 5 years. The announcement requires strong documented experience in photoelectrodes and photoelectrochemical cells, with at least two lead-authored Scopus-indexed articles in English. Experience with SimaPro and the ecoinvent database is specifically requested, along with a track record in scientific dissemination and event participation. If the doctorate was earned abroad, recognition in Portugal is required before contract signature. Non-native speakers of Portuguese or English must show C1-level proficiency in at least one of these languages.

Funding and conditions: the gross monthly base salary is €2,408.11, plus holiday and Christmas allowances and meal allowance. The project is financed through COMPETE 2030 by Portugal 2030, the European Union, and FCT support. The application procedure is competitive and includes assessment of scientific/curricular background and an interview for shortlisted candidates.

How to apply: submit the application via the Apply UP portal using procedure code INVTERM-FEUP-26-8. The deadline is 30 October 2026 at 23:59 (Lisbon time). Applicants must upload the CV, degree certificates, selected works, and supporting documents in non-editable format, following the notice’s instructions.
