The Electrified WAstewater Treatment and Element Recovery (E-WATER) Lab at Michigan State University’s Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is excited to announce 1–2 fully funded PhD openings beginning Fall 2026.
Our research focuses on developing next-generation electrochemical systems to:
? Remove inorganic & organic pollutants from municipal, industrial, and agricultural wastewaters
? Recover value-added products for beneficial reuse
? Advance sustainable water and wastewater treatment

Engage in both lab and field-based research
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team on projects funded by DOE NAWI, DOD SERDP, US EPA, and NASEM
Gain expertise at the intersection of applied electrochemistry, water treatment, and resource recovery
Opportunities to present at major academic & professional conferences
?? Desired Background
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science/engineering field (with strong chemistry background)
Prior experience in wastewater treatment (electrochemical/bioprocesses/membrane/bioelectrochemical systems)
Skills in water quality analysis (IC, TOC, ICP-OES) & electrochemical techniques (voltammetry, EIS, etc.)
Strong communication & teamwork skills; research publication experience preferred
