About this position

Wageningen University & Research is recruiting for a fully funded Engineering Doctorate (EngD) opportunity in the Netherlands focused on forecasting plastic pollution reduction in rivers. The project is part of the Tools4CleanBANOS European project and aims to develop forecasting models that help reduce plastic pollution in river systems and improve understanding of plastic transport from rivers to the ocean.

This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates with interests in environmental science, hydrology, civil engineering, earth sciences, water quality modelling, sediment modelling, and sustainability-oriented research. The work includes assessing the impact of different pollution reduction strategies, improving spatial and temporal modelling, and collaborating with more than 20 partners from academia, government, and industry across Europe.

Eligibility highlights: a master's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences, Hydrology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field; experience with hydrological, hydraulic, sediment, or water quality modelling; coding skills in Python, R, or MATLAB (or willingness to learn); and excellent English communication skills.

Funding: the position is fully funded for 2 years and includes a gross monthly salary of €3,029 plus an 8.3% year-end bonus. Additional benefits mentioned include flexible working hours, campus sports facilities, a pension scheme, and support for international candidates such as visa assistance, relocation support, partner career services, and housing guidance.

Deadline: 21 August 2026, with rolling review and priority for applications submitted by 4 August 2026.
