A fully funded PhD position is available at the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, University College Dublin, under the supervision of Dr. Zhenjiao Du. The project focuses on AI-driven discovery of bioactive peptides, integrating machine learning, computational biology, and food engineering to accelerate the identification of peptides with therapeutic and functional potential. The research aims to develop an AI-powered peptide discovery platform, predicting a comprehensive range of biofunctional and safety-related properties of peptides, and supporting rational experimental design for the production and characterization of targeted bioactive protein hydrolysates. The project is also open to students interested in large language models (LLMs) for fermentation and biomanufacturing. The successful candidate will receive a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per year, a tuition waiver, and a contribution to fees for four years. Applicants should have a background in food engineering, computational chemistry, bioinformatics, data science, chemical engineering, or related fields, with strong teamwork and communication skills, and proficiency in English. The AI4FE Lab at UCD promotes interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, biological systems, and food engineering.
