About this position

Fully funded 4-year PhD position in Argument Structure and Interface Phenomena at Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), Tarragona.

The position is part of the research project AURI – Argument Structure of Unergative Predicates and Related Interface Phenomena (PID2025-171173NB-I00), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. The successful candidate will join the Research Group on Language and Linguistics (ROLLING) and pursue the doctorate within the interuniversity Doctoral Programme in Cognitive Science and Language, based in the Department of English and German Studies at URV.

This opportunity is aimed at a strong candidate in theoretical linguistics, especially syntax and morphology, with research interests in argument structure, event structure, and the lexico-syntax interface. Possible dissertation topics include unergativity, cognate objects, and light verb constructions, with scope for cross-linguistic and/or experimental research. The dissertation topic will be developed jointly with the successful candidate.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in Linguistics, Philology, or a closely related field, an excellent academic record at both undergraduate and Master’s level, and a strong interest in morphosyntax and interface phenomena. Catalan is not required at application, but the candidate is expected to acquire working knowledge of Catalan within the first two years of the PhD.
