About this position
Call for applications for a fully funded PhD at Cranfield University, UK on building climate resilience using gardens as green infrastructure. The project investigates how domestic gardens can help reduce flood risk, improve drought resilience, and support ecosystem services through better understanding of garden water balance.
The research is carried out in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and is funded through the Leverhulme Trust / Connected Waters Leverhulme Doctoral Programme. The studentship covers tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend of £19,237 per year for up to 4 years, plus £10,000 for research and training.
Research activities include monitoring soil moisture, evapotranspiration, runoff, and other water dynamics in domestic gardens, RHS Wisley, and Cranfield facilities; conducting field experiments and data collection; building and validating hydrological models; using GIS and remote sensing for spatial analysis; and developing practical recommendations for climate-resilient gardening.
Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline. A background in hydrology, environmental science, or physical geography is desirable. Training will be provided in GIS, modelling, soils, and vegetation monitoring. The opportunity is primarily for home (UK) students who meet UK residency requirements.
Deadline: 3 June 2026. How to apply: submit an application via the Cranfield online portal and contact Dr Andrea Momblanch for further details.
