About this position

Applications are open for a fully funded PhD project at The University of Manchester in collaboration with the Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning. The project focuses on co-adapting cardiac rehabilitation for children and young people with congenital heart disease in Pakistan, as part of the NIHR-funded ACROSS programme.

The research will explore how to develop, adapt, and evaluate paediatric cardiac rehabilitation strategies for young people with congenital heart conditions. The study will include a systematic review of existing cardiac rehabilitation interventions, qualitative co-design work with children and young people, carers, and health professionals, and a small feasibility study to assess acceptability and inform future evaluation.

This is a full-time, 3-year PhD studentship. Funding covers tuition fees, University registration fees, and an annual stipend at the applicable local / UKRI rate. Matriculation will be with the University of Manchester, while the successful candidate will be based at the host institution in Pakistan.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should be fluent English speakers, hold at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent), and have completed a Masters degree by September 2026. A relevant Masters background in psychology, health psychology, nursing, or a related field is desirable, especially with research methods training and experience in behaviour change, long-term conditions, and comorbid mental health problems. Applicants must already be resident in Pakistan or be prepared to live there for the duration of the project.

To apply, first contact the Primary Supervisor to discuss suitability, then submit the formal application via the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health Doctoral Academy website and select PhD Nursing.
