About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity in chemical biology, protein engineering, synthetic biology, and advanced imaging at the University of Edinburgh.
The project is part of a 2027 intake and focuses on developing next-generation molecular tools to quantify protein/peptide trafficking in the endolysosomal system. The research uses genetically encoded, environment-responsive fluorescent amino acids and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) to study how proteins are sorted, recycled, and degraded in live cells.
Supervision is a co-supervised collaboration with Prof Marc Vendrell and Dr Ferran Nadal-Bufí, within the Institute for Regeneration and Repair and the University of Edinburgh School of Chemistry. The project also includes an industrial partnership with Externa Biosciences, offering exposure to translational biotechnology and protein therapeutics engineering.
Funding is provided by the EastBio BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership and covers both stipend and tuition fees. The opportunity is open to UK and international students.
Applicants with backgrounds in chemistry, biochemistry, or cell biology are especially encouraged to apply. Deadline: 16 November 2026. Full application details are available via the FindAPhD link.
