About this position

Imperial College London’s Department of Chemical Engineering is advertising a funded PhD project in engineering synthetic cells for next-generation biotechnology.

The project is led by Prof Yuval Elani and the Elani Group, a multidisciplinary team working across chemical biology, synthetic biology, and molecular bioengineering. The research aims to design, construct, and test synthetic cell-like systems built from biological components such as membranes, proteins, nucleic acids, and molecular machinery. These systems are intended to respond to biologically and medically relevant stimuli and may enable future biosensing, diagnostics, smart materials, and advanced therapeutics.

The post is especially suitable for candidates with backgrounds in the molecular and physical sciences who want to apply those skills to biology, though applicants with more traditional synthetic biology experience are also welcome. The scholarship is open to applicants worldwide and is not restricted by fee status.

Funding includes full tuition coverage plus a tax-free maintenance stipend of £25,000 per year for 42 months.

Applications are accepted all year round, with selection rounds listed for 1 November 2027, 11 January 2027, and 1 March 2027 (subject to scholarship availability). Applicants must submit a PhD application through Imperial’s online admissions system. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Prof Elani at [email protected] before applying.
