About this position

University of Trento in Italy is advertising a fully funded PhD opportunity in Civil Engineering with a strong interdisciplinary focus on quantum computing, computational mechanics, seismic engineering, and soil-structure interaction. The project is titled Quantum-Integrated Multi-Physics Soil-Structure Interaction Framework for Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Large-Scale Civil Structures and is hosted by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering.

The research aims to develop a quantum computing-based framework for analyzing the nonlinear dynamic behavior of large engineering structures exposed to natural hazards, with applications to high-resolution seismic analysis of CERN strategic infrastructure. The PhD student will collaborate with CERN in Switzerland and may undertake research periods outside Italy, working with international experts in quantum computing, computational mechanics, seismic engineering, and facility analysis.

Eligibility highlights: a master's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field; experience in computational mechanics, scientific programming, and dynamic problem analysis; and strong English and teamwork skills. Knowledge of quantum algorithms, quantum computing, quantum information, and finite element analysis is considered an advantage. Familiarity with Python, MATLAB/Simulink, ABAQUS, or OpenSees is preferred.

Funding: fully funded PhD scholarship for 3 years, starting in November 2026 and ending in October 2029.

Application: applications are submitted online through the official university portal. Deadline is 24 August 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Italy time.
