About this position
PhD opportunity at King’s College London in the Department of Physics: Discovering New Physics in Near-Fields — ERC ATLANTIS Project.
This funded PhD project sits in the PACO Photonics Group within the Photonics & Nanotechnology Group at King’s College London, London, United Kingdom. The research explores electromagnetism, acoustics, optical physics, theoretical physics, computational physics, nanotechnology, and applied mathematics, with a focus on near-fields, structured waves, topological textures, singularities, 3D polarisation, chirality, spatiotemporal vortices, nano-mechanics, and unusual forces/torques in complex media.
The project is part of ATLANTIS (Advanced Techniques in Light and Acoustic Near-fields: Time and Spatial structuring), funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant. Two fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentships are available. The funding covers a maintenance stipend and tuition fees, and also supports conferences, workshops, training, collaboration visits, publication costs, and specialised research software.
Applicants from any nationality are welcome. The ideal candidate has a first-class or upper-second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a scientific, engineering, mathematical, or other technical discipline, plus strong problem-solving ability, creativity, intellectual curiosity, and coding skills in Python, MATLAB, or another language. Experimental experience is not required.
