About this position
PhD opportunity: Evolutionary and Ecological Impact of the Western Lifestyle on the Gut Microbiome at Quadram Institute Bioscience within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP).
This project investigates how Western lifestyles shape the ecology and evolution of the human gut microbiome. Using more than 6,000 gut metagenomes and strain-resolved metagenomics, the project will examine ecological and evolutionary signatures associated with industrialisation, bacterial adaptation across hosts and environments, and global variation in bacterial metabolic niches.
Research areas / keywords: gut microbiome, evolutionary genomics, microbial ecology, metagenomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, machine learning, epidemiology, nutrition, medical statistics.
Supervision: Prof Falk Hildebrand and Dr Wilfried Haerty, based at the Quadram Institute Bioscience and Earlham Institute in Norwich Research Park. The team offers expertise in microbial ecology, evolutionary genomics, computational biology, and microbial physiology.
Funding: Fully funded 4-year PhD studentship. Tuition fees are covered, and the award includes a stipend for living expenses (£21,805 for 2026/27) plus a £5,000 per year Research Training Support Grant.
