About this position
Fully Funded PhD: Novel Cryogenic Energy Storage and CO₂ Capture at University College Dublin, School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering.
This PhD project focuses on the development of a novel cryogenic energy storage and CO₂ capture process currently undergoing patenting. The successful candidate will work across chemical engineering, thermodynamic modelling, process simulation, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, process design, and experimental validation.
The research will begin with steady-state and transient modelling of the full thermodynamic cycle, followed by process configuration comparison, operating-condition optimisation, and analysis of variables such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, and feed composition. The student will then design the main process equipment and experimental system, including heat exchangers, compression and expansion equipment, cryogenic fluid handling, instrumentation, process control, and data acquisition.
The laboratory-scale system will be constructed and commissioned in UCD. The PhD researcher will operate the system, compare experimental results with model predictions, and refine the process design. The project is strongly practical and includes training in thermodynamics, cryogenic process engineering, modelling, equipment design, experimental research, scientific publication, and technology development.
The position is funded for four years and starts in September 2026. Funding includes a €25,000 annual stipend, payment of PhD fees, and a project budget for equipment, materials, computing, and conference participation.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain before the PhD begins, at least a 2.1 honours degree or equivalent in chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, energy engineering, or a closely related quantitative engineering discipline. A relevant master's degree is helpful but not required. Strong skills in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, modelling, numerical analysis, and communication are expected; experience with process simulation, CFD, MATLAB, Python, Aspen, COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM, instrumentation, or process control is advantageous.
