About this position

Fully funded PhD studentship in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, in collaboration with Nature Based Ltd.

The project is titled Experimental & Numerical Analysis of Floating Kelp Farms for Wave Attenuation in Offshore Wind. It explores how large-scale cultivated kelp farms can act as floating breakwaters to protect offshore wind assets. The research combines hydrodynamics, offshore renewable energy, nature-based solutions, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), physical wave tank experiments at the Kelvin Hydrodynamics Lab, and analysis of real-world field data from a commercial kelp farm on the Isle of Mull.

Funding includes full Home fees plus a stipend of £21,805–£22,965 per year for 3 years. The post notes that international applicants are welcome, but the studentship covers Home (UK) fees only; the difference between Home and International tuition fees would need to be covered by the student or external scholarships.

Applicants should hold a first-class or 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline. Strong interest in hydrodynamics and experimental/computational methods is expected, with good communication and problem-solving skills. MATLAB/Python proficiency is desirable.

Supervision is listed for Dr. Claudio Rodriguez Castillo and Dr. saishuai Dai. To apply, email Dr. Rodriguez Castillo directly with the subject line provided in the post. Deadline: 25 September 2026. Start date: 01 October 2026.
