About this position

PhD opportunity in One Health (meta)genomics of E. coli-associated urinary tract infections in pregnancy at Quadram Institute Bioscience in Norwich, United Kingdom.

This project investigates why urinary tract infections (UTIs) in pregnancy can be more severe, with a focus on uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), metagenomics, genomics, bioinformatics, microbiology, epidemiology, and molecular genetics. The student will work with clinicians at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to collect urine and faecal samples from pregnant women, then apply long-read genome and metagenome sequencing, 18S qPCR, and cytokine quantification to study microbial composition, human DNA load, and disease severity.

The project also uses whole-genome sequencing to compare UTI-causing E. coli with strains from the patients’ own guts, public genomes from non-pregnant individuals, and food/environmental sources. The broader aim is to understand transmission routes, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and One Health links between humans, food, and the environment.

This is a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship through the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NRPDTP). Funding includes tuition fees, an annual stipend for living costs, and a Research Training Support Grant. The programme also includes a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS) and comprehensive training.

Eligibility highlights include a UK-equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 and IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category. The opportunity is open to students worldwide and is full-time.

The project has been shortlisted for funding. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027. The stated start date is 1 October 2027.
