About this position
Fully funded 4-year PhD position at Ghent University in the Department of Geography / Climate and Earth Lab.
The project focuses on the process-based evaluation of convection-permitting climate models over Equatorial East Africa. The successful candidate will work with an ensemble of state-of-the-art CPMs, including ALARO, AROME, ICON, SCREAM, and CP4A, and will investigate how model biases arise from large-scale and regional circulation, fast moist physics, and slow land–atmosphere interactions.
The research will use novel rainfall observations and satellite missions such as EarthCARE and Meteosat Third Generation (MTG), together with related EUMETSAT cloud, land-surface, and radiation products. The position is part of the FWO-funded AfricaN conVective systems In a changing cLimate (ANVIL) project.
Applicants should hold a master's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Engineering, or equivalent. A strong background in atmospheric modelling and remote sensing is required, along with experience using Linux and HPC systems; some knowledge of Fortran is preferred. Good communication skills and fluent English are also expected.
Benefits mentioned include a friendly and dynamic research environment, collaboration with partners at the UK Met Office, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Belgian/Czech Meteorological Services, access to the Flemish High-Performance Computing Centre, training opportunities, and 36 days of holiday leave.
