About this position
The University of Helsinki Faculty of Science is recruiting a Doctoral Researcher in Atmospheric Sciences for the AI-Dream project. The project focuses on weather forecasting, dynamic meteorology, machine learning, explainable AI, and high-performance computing (HPC). The doctoral researcher will develop criteria and evaluation suites to test the physical accuracy of deep ML models and apply methods such as Deep Linear Probes and Latent Space Cartography.
The position is based in the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) and the successful candidate will work in the dynamic meteorology group supervised by Dr. Clément Bouvier. The group’s research spans atmospheric deep convection, extra-tropical cyclones, heat waves, ensemble prediction, algorithmic parameter estimation, and future weather and climate change on global and regional scales. The work includes collaboration with the University of Cambridge, Washington University, ECMWF, and the Lahti University of Technology.
This is a fixed-term 3-year doctoral researcher employment starting latest in January 2027 (or as soon as filled). The salary is approximately EUR 2700–2900/month depending on qualifications and experience. Eligibility highlights: applicants should have recently completed an MSc in Physics, Meteorology, Computer Science, or a similar field; MSc students near completion may also apply. Strong English skills, experience in dynamic meteorology, and interest in the project scope are required. Applicants must already have, or obtain within six months, the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, and must be willing to spend three months at the University of Cambridge.
